China sends bombers carrying missiles amid war games

China conducted mock missile strikes and dispatched bombers on Friday in its two-day Taiwan drills, which it called “punishment” for President Lai’s remarks on Taiwan being “independent”.

Beijing had mobilised land and rocket forces and sent warships and military jets into the waters off Taiwan after Lai described the island as a “sovereign and independent country” in his inaugural speech on Monday.

The bombers used several attack formations, carrying out mock strikes in co-ordination with naval vessels, according to Chinese state television CCTV, as China tested its ability to “seize power” and control key areas of Taiwan.
