  1. My information is from the director and writers of the movie. In their dvd commentary they specifically pointed out their own mistake in going from 5 to 1, they were only told of their mistake by the Department of Defense after the movie was made. They thought doing it as a countdown made sense for the story so they left it in the movie even though they were mistaken.

  2. Well that and "The only winning move is not to play"

  3. No the best line was …"Id piss on a sparkplug if I thought it would help "

  4. Are you serious?Defcon goes through 5 levels 1 being the most serious and 5 being the most lax.

  5. Flush the bombers, get the subs in launch mode

  6. You are wrong. DEFCON 5 means peace time, while DEFCON 1 is maximum readyness.
Even the colors of the lights are correct.

  7. Well if I am wrong then that must mean both the director, the writers AND Department of Defense are wrong. ITS FROM THE COMMENTARY!!!

  8. what about "the only winning move is not to play"

  9. My two cents (sterling) is that, the best line from this excellent slice of 80's wonder is….

We've had men in those silos since before any of you guys were watching "Howdy Doody"!

As much as anything because it was the fore-runner of

"Let me tell you something, Harp. I was in this bureau while you were still popping zits on your funny face and jacking off to the lingerie section of the Sears catalog"

    From Point Break.

Although maybe the best line is actually
"Do you want to play a game?"

  10. Well, when the movie was made the information about DEFCON stages was classified so the director and writers couldn't know. They declassified it in 2006. You can look it up. Just use Google.
5 is the lowest stage of readiness, 1 means nuclear war is imminent.

  11. Flush the toilet, get the TP. I just dropped DEFCON 2.

  12. I forgot the name of this actor, but he did an excellent performance here. The way he looks when he realizes they need to go to DEFCON 1 is very convincing.

  13. It's weird that in the DVD commentary the director says he got the DEFCON system wrong, but actually according to wikipedia he got it right. 1 is maximum readiness.

  14. Technically defcon 1 is nuclear war almost immediately so that is bad

  15. "were going to Defcon 1"
    Me: Shit just got real

  16. Only the President AND the Secretary of Defense can order a change to Defcon 1. No general has authority to do this directly…

  17. – "We're going to Defcon 1"

    -¡PERO LA PUTA MADRE!

  18. my dad worked security in air force icbm during cold war and said that a few computer mess up happened that said there was incoming Russian missiles in a one month period it happened like 12 times people freaked out cause of it and ended up leaving the military cause they thought it was real every time. my dad said the scariest one he was on flight line and alert siren went off and bombers were ready to take off and alert level changed and changed and changed again and again and then he heard over radio in the open make ready to launch the alert force then a min later secure for incoming RV's (reenty vehicles) and bombs. then wait and wait some more bombers are still on the ground engines on ready to go burning fuel. missile crews just did first rotation of launch keys then message come over saying everything's fine. find out the computer at NORAD or sac some left training program in the computer oh dad said this happen about week later with same result after which they changed how they did stuff so it wouldn't happen again

  19. It's General Carville from Red Alert 2!

  20. i wish i cauld watch this movie in full with out having to subscribe to some body,s channel. totally un fare

  21. What the fuck is a DEFCON? I can't understand.

  22. I like how he twitches as soon as he says defcon 1

  23. North Korea will be hearing this pretty soon

  24. When you're doing your homework while the teacher is collecting it

  25. Defcon 1 is actually the point where the nuclear missiles are launching. But never mind, great movie and great sceen.

  26. "We're going to DEFCON One…"… Going to refrigerator to checking post-apocalypse beer supply…

  27. He flushed the bombers at DEFCON 3. Why is he flushing them again?

  28. did some airmen smoke weed at norad. or were severely depressed.

  29. Portions of the script (what Star Trek writers would call "Technobabble") were lifted directly from the dramatic portion of the documentary First Strike. This is the same documentary that ABC's The Day After (1983) used full clips from. "I want to confirm, is this an exercise? Roger, copy. This is not an exercise!" First Strike used actual Air Force personnel and drills during the dramatic portion of the documentary, which is why (I believe) subsequent Hollywood films are so accurate with their dialogue.

  30. Customer number Defcon 1, to your collection point please

  31. The heavens declare the glory of the Bomb, and the firmament showeth Its handiwork. Glory be to the Bomb, and to the Holy Fallout. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. World without end. May the Blessings of the Almighty Bomb, and the Fellowship of the Holy Fallout, descend upon us all. This day and forever more. Amen.

  32. We’ve had nukes for 70+ years and only two dropped on people at the very beginning. Do you think there will never be another one dropped on a city? It is going to happen. It will happen!

  33. What was missing? First strike will be with submarines- almost no warning time for either side. This alone substantiates mutual destruction.

  34. And to think we might be heading into WW3 .
