Ferris Bueller's Day Off
7:12 Definitely. It's fantastic!
Ladyhawke is an absolute must-see!
The only winning move is not to play
Been there
Ferris Bueller's Day Off!!!!
Saw it when it came out, and it blew my mind! And this isn't even thr xcariest movid about nuclear war…that honor goes to THREADS…not to be watched at night or after a big meal. The music is by Arthur B. Rubinstein, who was s big nsme in movie and TV music.
I'd cook for you! I love your reactions!
Project X with Helen Hunt
31:51 Is it just a game or is it real?
A great tagline. I saw that on stickers on school bags, because I'm old AF.
Google confirmed my recollection:
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US Strategic Air Command was placed on DEFCON 2 for the first time in history.
11:15 — Wardialing .. You'd go number by number until you found something..
20:38 — everyone seems to miss the subtext of John's relationship with his secretary…
Funny little quirky bit : the dark haired nerd from the beginning is also in "Airplane." Also a fun movie to watch.
The guy at the beginning who couldn't turn the key played the role of Leo McGarry on The West Wing and the bald FBI agent played the role of Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy.
There's a saying from another famous film: "There's no winner in a game of losers!"
I remember , I live in Downey California which we had NASA and Rockwell which we built the space shuttle. We were using dial up system at the time, we had blue boxes made phone calls. Never broke into schools computer system. To be honest we lost Carpenter singer which we had media coverage. Frank Martinez Downey California ❤❤❤
Election is a great movie. I'd also recommend ferris buellers day off and short circuit
Since you were curious, the US military reached Defcon 2 on two occasions – the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and the beginning of Operation Desert Storm in the first Persian Gulf War in 1991. To public knowledge, that's the highest Defcon that's ever been reached, but I doubt they'd admit that Defcon 1 was ever activated if nothing ever actually happened.
Something similar to this almost happened on the Russian side, but not involving AI. See below from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Soviet_nuclear_false_alarm_incident
On 26 September 1983, during the Cold War, the Soviet nuclear early warning system Oko reported the launch of one ICBM with four more missiles behind it, from the US. An engineer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces on duty at the command center suspected it was a false alarm and decided to wait for corroborating evidence—of which none arrived—rather than immediately relaying the warning up the chain of command. This decision is seen as having prevented a retaliatory nuclear strike against the United States and its NATO allies, which would likely have resulted in a full-scale nuclear war. Investigation of the satellite warning system later determined that the system had indeed malfunctioned.
Don't feel left out as a Canadian. NORAD is the North American Air Defense Command – a joint venture between US & Canada. 😎
If you watch Godzilla, since you wanted to watch it based on this movie, I recommend checking out the Matthew Broderick Godzilla. Definitely my favorite of the bunch.
Another event was during cuban missile crises. This is all in history books, research it as its fascinating. A russian sub off coast of cuba mistakenly thought america had already launched our nukes. Two senior officers literally had their hands on launch buttons when the third senior office, visili arkhipov refused to launch without direct orders from the kremlin. None of us would be here without this man, but yet few know he stood up and saved the world. Why do we have holidays for the likes of chris columbus but not this man? Incidentally the defcon level which is a real thing, defense condition, is usually at 4. Right now due to russian invasion of ukraine and escalating tension in s china sea with china threatening taiwan (our deployment of strike groups near taiwan, and another to europe to protect nato) were at defcon 3.
As Ray Stevens said, "it's me again, Margaret." Just did a redo. Some Mathew Broderick, LADYHAWKE, GODZILLA, with Jean Reno, FERRIS BUELLER, PROJECT X, the CABLE GUY, INSPECTOR GADGET, The PRODUCERS, redo, BILOXI BLUES, GLORY. Scads more. Didn't like 'zilla, insp gadg. Didn't see election. Some nukes? FAIL SAFE, same year as Dr Strangelove, SPIES LIKE US, THE DAY AFTER. Lots of these as well. If the big one happens, radiation is going to get me in Mid Mo. Back when WAFB was a missle base, the Soviets targeted two warheads for each silo. If you calculate the time of the nuclear flashes to dissipate and string them together consecutively, it would have taken two hours of 'splosions just for one base. If you figure KC and StL as likely distribution centers, likely 90% of Missourians would be dead on the first day. The radiation clouds would of course kill millions more worldwide. And that is just from one set of targets. Like Joshua said, "The only way to win is to not play." Sorry so dark, babe. Hug the beasties
This event was probably the inspiration to this movie it and the move release happend in the same year • A military exercise named Able Archer 83 a command post exercise carried out by NATO military forces and political leaders between 7 and 11 November 1983.The exercise simulated a Soviet conventional attack on European NATO forces 3 days before the start of the exercise (D-3), transitioning to a large scale chemical war (D-1) and on day 1 (D+1) of the exercise, NATO forces sought political guidance on the use of nuclear weapons to stem the Soviet advance which was approved by political leaders. NATO then began simulating preparations for a transition to nuclear war.
These simulations included 170 radio-silent flights to air lift 19,000 US troops to Europe, regularly shifting military commands to avoid nuclear attack, the use of new nuclear weapon release procedures, the use of nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (C3) networks for passing nuclear orders, the moving of NATO forces in Europe through each of the alert phases from DEFCON 5 to DEFCON 1, and the participation of political leaders like Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl and Ronald Reagan.
The issue was worsened by leaders referring to B-52 sorties as "nuclear strikes",by the increased use of encrypted diplomatic channels between the US and UK, and by the nuclear attack false alarm in September.
In response, Soviet nuclear capable aircraft were fueled and armed ready to launch on the runway, and ICBMs were brought up to alert. Soviet leaders believed the exercise was a ruse to cover NATO preparations for a nuclear first strike and frantically sent a telegram to its residencies seeking information on NATO preparations for an attack. The exercise closely aligned with Soviet timeline estimations that a NATO first strike would take 7 to 10 days to execute from the political decision being made.
Soviet forces stood down after 11 November when the exercise ended and NATO was not aware of the complete Soviet response until British intelligence asset Oleg Gordievsky passed on the information.
You need to see Matthew Broderick in 'Ferris Bueller's Dat Off' & Ally Sheedy in moviees like 'The Breakfast Club'

Fun fact: the commander who didn't turn the key in the first scenes quit is job at the USAF and turned to the FBI.
Ca. 15 Years later he will be involved in a terrorist case involving hostages as one military unit seized Alcatraz threating San Francisco with chemical weapons.
Never Give the Computer A Brain!!!
Great reaction Jen! The 80s had a lot of great movies that still hold up. Tech was still in its infancy and AI was crazy talk and video games were king! Luv ya Jen ❤️💛
LadyHawke is one of my favorite Matthew Brodrick movies
@36:03—36:09. "How about a nice game of chess."
We went to Defcon 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We went to Defcon 3 during rhe Korean War.
We didn't have defcons during wars prior to that, because we didn't have nuclear weapons during previous wars.
"Can you have done this in the 80s?"
Yep, that was a ground start payphone… Just needed to ground that line to activate the line to get dial tone.
My favorite Matthew Broderick movie is The Cable Guy starring Jim Carrey.
You gotta watch Ladyhawke (1985). My personal favorite Matthew Broderick movie. Also has the actor who played Faulkin in Wargames in it, but in a very different role. Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer also star. I won't say anything about the setting, genre, or plot. Don't want to give too much away. I hope you'll check it out!!
President Ronald Reagan screened this movie at Camp David the weekend it came out. He asked his advisors whether or not something like what was portrayed in the movie was possible. They got back to him a few days later advising that it was. Reagan then brought into law the first cyber security laws as well as updating protocols and procedures at all Defense installations across the US.
What are they blowing? I won't go there Jenny Penny. ❤ you
Slushies at 7-11? They have slurpees. Your thinking of quckemart.❤ you Jenny Penny.
Watch Lady Hawk.
John Lennon was going to portray the scientist that made the WOPR defense system .
Election is good, but Ferris Bueller's Day Off is fantastic! Also, Ladyhawke was my younger brother's favorite movie by him growing up, so I feel obligated to recommend it also (it's a good watch). 🙂
See Matthew Broderick in "The Producers" 😂😂😂
Just a tiny nitpick: Tab was sugar-free, so they weren't hopped up on sugar. 😉 Also, you mentioned wanting to watch Godzilla; in 1998, Matthew Broderick was in a Godzilla movie! LOL
"…your wife?"
Movies about "Thermal Global War", that actual shows you when it happens, and it's not USA "The Day After", but the UK version called "Threads (1983)", yes it's low budget, set in Sheffield (North England), it was broadcast in the UK at the height of the cold war (Gorby was still 2 years away). I watched it aged 11 in my bedroom as mum, dad and sister would not watch it. It has stayed with me all my life and was the reason I joined CND the day after (no pun), warning it's very very depressing, there is zero humour.
You haven't seen anything with Mathew Broderick? Have you not see Ferris Buhler's Day Off?
Interesting tidbit; when Ronald Reagan, saw this movie, he started a cyber security program.
Not a Reagan fan, but I give him props for this
Holy Crap!!!!!!!! You have no idea how many reactions to this movie I have watched! YOU are one of the VERY few who has known what they were looking at most of the time your general age! You are renewing my faith that there will be a future for humanity!
election is an excellent movie. I recommend you watch and overreact to it.
Leg warmers never left there still here.
